Planets in Astrology, PLUTO. Signs, Traits, Symbol.
Planets in Astrology, PLUTO. Signs, Traits, Symbol.

Located beyond Neptune, in an outer region of the solar system known as the Kuiper Belt, Pluto was only discovered in 1930. At the time it was regarded as the 9th planet of the solar system. It has since been reclassified as a dwarf planet.

In Vedic astrology, Pluto has never been considered to be a planet and there are no meaningful references to it. Having said that, there are many similarities between Pluto and the mythical Vedic planet, 'Ketu'.

Pluto is recognised in KP astrology and Tropical or Western forms of astrology, such as the Hellenistic style.

Characteristics of Pluto

Traditional forms of astrology typically consider only those planets that are visible without the use of powerful magnification. Pluto is not easily visible through an ordinary amateur telescope due to its small size and distance from Earth. To view Pluto, a telescope with substantial magnification and good optics is required. Having said that, many modern astrologers who pratice traditional forms of astrology, such as say Hellenistic astrology, do integrate this planet into their readings. Its effects being viewed as complementary to those of Mars and Saturn, especially the more malefic sides of these planets.

Pluto is associated with transformation, regeneration, power and the subconscious. It represents unseen forces and those hidden aspects of life that result in change, rebirth or renewal and and spiritual growth. Its influence can lead to the discarding of conventional beliefs to make way for new growth, akin to the mythological, 'Rise of the Phoenix from the ashes'. Pluto's energy also involves metaphorical references to death and rebirth, such as the end of one phase and the beginning of another. This can apply to all aspects of life like relationships, careers, personal beliefs and so on.

Pluto's alignment in a birth chart is seen as an indicator of the soul's purpose. Certain astrologers therefore, view Pluto as a marker of the soul's evolutionary journey, in that it highlights 'Karmic' patterns and past life influences.
